Skill cleats are generally lower-cut and lighter for acceleration and changes of direction. Lineman cleats use more supportive mid- or high-cut constructions and reinforced uppers for stability at the line of scrimmage.

American football cleats can include a front toe stud that soccer rules may not permit. Use footwear approved for the sport, playing surface and competition rules you are taking part in.

Molded studs are fixed to the outsole and provide a simple all-purpose setup. Detachable systems let players change stud length for different field conditions, but they must be permitted by the relevant league and venue.
